Why does outdoor table tennis work so well in public environments?

Firstly - the barriers to play could not be lower! Age, skill level and gender are simply not a factor in a game (or rally) of table tennis - meaning anybody and everybody can have fun instantly, just by picking up a racquet and ball.

Secondly - outdoor table tennis is not a new phenomenon. It has been around and in abundance for decades in parts of Europe and Asia. Outdoor table tennis has stood the test of time in communities where it is now ingrained and as much a part of their recreation culture as pick up basketball is in the United States or Australia.

Thirdly - table tennis is inherently fun. We use the phrase ‘social, active play’ to describe ping pong, and the use of the word play is intentional - for children, young people and adults! Play gets people of all ages laughing, smiling and jumping around.

Presented as a program of instructive initiatives, scheduled over a two year period, the program shares an evidence-based toolkit to activate, promote and support every public POPP table and table tennis community.

Utilising POPP tables as a canvas for public art, and collaborating with local artists and designers, local governments, BIDs and place-based organisations are able to develop a grassroots place identity that is unique, appealing and capable of visual, place-relevant story-telling.
     Designed for DIY (Do It Yourself) Artwork, all POPP outdoor table tennis tables can have original artwork, typography, patters, logos, mottos, slogans and messages applied to their surface. DIY Artwork is applied or coordinated by the customer onsite after delivery using the DIY Artwork guidelines and checklists supplied with every table.
