Outdoor table tennis is a proven winner for local governments, business improvement districts (BIDs) and place-based organisations

Free-to-use POPP outdoor table tennis tables are fast-becoming the go-to park, plaza and open space feature for communities that prioritise social, active and playful environments

Why does outdoor table tennis work so well in public environments?

Firstly - the barriers to play could not be lower! Age, skill level and gender are simply not a factor in a game (or rally) of table tennis - meaning anybody and everybody can have fun instantly, just by picking up a racquet and ball.

Secondly - outdoor table tennis is not a new phenomenon. It has been around and in abundance for decades in parts of Europe and Asia. Outdoor table tennis has stood the test of time in communities where it is now ingrained and as much a part of their recreation culture as pick up basketball is in the United States or Australia.

Thirdly - table tennis is inherently fun. We use the phrase ‘social, active play’ to describe ping pong, and the use of the word play is intentional - for children, young people and adults! Play gets people of all ages laughing, smiling and jumping around.

How can local governments, BIDs and place-based organisations create truly awesome outdoor table tennis hubs?

  • Choose the right POPP outdoor table tennis table for the space. To start with, have a look at our HEROair table here, ICON table here and HERO tables here (Australian customers only). Not sure what to choose? Email us at [email protected] - the POPP team will happily listen and give you great tips, recommendations and advice to suit your community.
  • Check that your space is Made for Play. We can help by providing a list of simple questions to assess your space and its suitability for a POPP outdoor table tennis table. Score well? You get a car! No, not really - but it does mean your POPP table will likely be a hit! :)

  • Use the POPP Play Daily activation program (free to POPP customers). Play Daily is our table tennis table-led place activation programme 15 years in the making! Distilled from our own knowledge and expertise, and our customers’ experiences and feedback, the program guarantees the best outcome for your POPP table.
  • Consider DIY artwork for your POPP table. ‘Public Playable Art’ is a concept we introduced for outdoor table tennis tables back in 2010. There are so many wonderful community benefits - you can read about them here.
  • Rest assured in the knowledge that thousands of POPP customers have chosen the HERO and HEROair tables for their public spaces. The ‘HERO’ shape is our most popular design for parks, plazas and open spaces - and this is of course combined with our customary durability and weatherproof permanence.

  • Encourage community members to take ownership of ‘their’ outdoor table tennis table. Community partners and champions are the unheralded heroes of successful, activated parks and plazas - and with their help and yours (by offering racquets and balls, supporting events and competitions, or encouraging regular social table tennis times), your outdoor table tennis hub will quickly build momentum. With our Play Daily Activation Program, POPP guarantees the best outcome for every community POPP table.

Play Daily encourages and enables daily table tennis through an easy to adopt, step-by-step guide for local governments, BIDs and place-based organisations. Presented as a program of instructive initiatives, scheduled over a two year period, the program shares an evidence-based toolkit to activate, promote and support every public POPP table and table tennis community.
Delivering a successful Play Daily program will result in sustained place activation and community engagement - including by becoming:

  • A place known for its outdoor table tennis table
  • A community that understands and adopts the BYO nature of outdoor table tennis
  • A fun-first, friendly environment that happily encourages social, active play - across all ages
  • A place for regular players or to meet, connect and play together - both casually and competitively

Like public art? Like ping pong? Did you know you can have both?!

Through community-driven artwork, the POPP concept of Public Playable Art can bring life, colour and authenticity into a community space. Utilising POPP tables as a canvas for public art, and collaborating with local artists and designers, local governments, BIDs and place-based organisations are able to develop a grassroots place identity that is unique, appealing and capable of visual, place-relevant story-telling.
Designed for DIY (Do It Yourself) Artwork, all POPP outdoor table tennis tables can have original artwork, typography, patters, logos, mottos, slogans and messages applied to their surface. DIY Artwork is applied or coordinated by the customer onsite after delivery using the DIY Artwork guidelines and checklists supplied with every table.

Hot DIY Artwork tip!

For the best game-play results - create artwork for the sides and net only - keeping the playing surface clear for players from the casual to the (highly) competitive!  Want some inspiration? Check out our DIY Artwork page here - including a list of artists POPP has collaborated with.

What is the most popular outdoor table tennis table at Australian local governments?
Hands down - the HERO table (available in Australia only). But the rest of the world need not miss out on this iconic ping pong shape - so we created the HEROair outdoor table tennis table (available worldwide - see the HEROair table here)!
