More than just an
outdoor ping pong table

POPP outdoor ping pong tables combine the game of ping pong, the colour and storytelling of artwork and the value of placemaking to create a prized feature in any community, school or urban space.

Health + Fitness

Ping pong (or table tennis) is both a brain game and incredibly physical. Featuring a fast-paced mix of aerobics, strategy and hand-eye coordination, ping pong combines both physical and mental exercise to achieve the ultimate in health and fitness.

How? The speed, spin and placement of the ball requires players to have gross and fine muscle movements. While the constancy and repetition of a rally and the tactical strategies inherent in the game keeps their brain sharp, body agile and blood pumping!

To dive a little deeper, outdoor ping pong delivers in leaps and bounds – for your mind and body.

  • 1
Being a part of a social community that is not defined by age, gender or class improves your mental health and wellbeing.
  • 2
For young people, at the critical growth stage in their motor learning and development, ping pong helps develop neuromuscular skill, conditioned reflexes and prolonged concentration.
  • 3
Anticipating your opponent's shot engages the prefrontal cortex - a part of the brain used for strategic planning and decision making.
  • 4
Increased evidence supports a link between playing ping pong and the prevention or reduction of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
  • 5
The aerobic exercise of ping pong stimulates the hippocampus - the part of your brain responsible for forming and retaining long-term facts and information.
  • 6
Increasing the flow of blood to your brain increases your motor skills and cognitive awareness.
  • 7
Playing ping pong develops mental acuity, alertness, concentration and tactical strategy.
  • 8
Rallies and practice improves your hand-eye coordination, balance and reflexes.
  • 9
The low-impact but physical nature of ping pong improves leg, arm and core strength without the high risk of injuries.
  • 10
The bursts of exertion and recovery in ping pong burns plenty of calories.

DIY Artwork

In 2010, POPP pioneered the concept of Public Playable Art in outdoor table tennis. Since then, ‘artworked’ outdoor ping pong tables have generated a multitude of cultural, place, social and economic benefits for communities.

Designed for DIY (Do It Yourself) Artwork, the HERO and ICON outdoor ping pong tables can have original work, typography, contrasting block colours or patterns, logos or slogans applied to their surfaces.

DIY Artwork is applied or coordinated by the customer onsite after delivery, through local artists, inhouse designers or signwriters.

All relevant information, guidelines and checklists for DIY Artwork preparation and application are included in the DIY Artwork Information document – available on request.

Placemaking

POPP outdoor ping pong tables breathe life into public and private spaces through ping pong, vibrant colours, DIY Artwork, physical activity and social connectivity.  Together with other placemaking and community-building strategies, POPP tables help create authentic, active and engaging outdoor spaces and, in doing so, generate real and measurable value for communities.

Proof of placemaking is in the playing (and the numbers):

  • Increase nearby property values by up to 22%*1

  • Reduce crime and violence rates and create safer places to play and relax*2

  • $1 of investment in public space equates to $20.84 worth of economic benefit*3

  • When inactive adults become active, $76.6bn of potential healthcare savings emerge*4

  • Foster inter-community connectivity and cultivate long- term engagement

  • Attractive communities are where people want to live, work and play

FAQ

1. WHAT IS THE LEAD TIME?

POPP seeks to deliver tables to site within 6 weeks from time of order.

2. HOW ARE TABLES MADE?

The HERO table is fabricated from high grade steel and undergoes a comprehensive surface and paint treatment. The fully welded, one-piece table weighs approximately 700kg - there are no removable parts (including the securing footings, convenient racquet and ball holder and net) and consequently no need to worry.

The ICON table is fabricated from high grade steel and undergoes a comprehensive surface and powder coat treatment. The table weighs approximately 350kg, is welded and secured fastened and includes securing footings and a discreet racquet and ball holder. The ICON is delivered packed in a custom crate (7 pieces) and can be assembled in approximately 1 hour with 2-3 people.

The LOCAL table frame and net is fabricated from high grade steel and then hot dip galvanised for a comprehensive anti-corrosion finish. The table top is a compact laminate made specifically for all-year, covered outdoor use. The Local table weighs approximately 215kg and is delivered flat-packed on a pallet for self-assembly in approximately 1 hour with 2-3 people.

3. HOW ARE TABLES DELIVERED?

The HERO table is delivered to site as a fully-welded, one-piece unit normally via a HIAB truck (truck with hydraulic crane arm attachment). Where truck access to the final site location is not possible, POPP will prepare an alternative delivery plan that may include a pallet trolley, forklift or - in very rare circumstances - a crane, to position the table. POPP does not undertake the anchoring of tables however anchoring instructions are provided.

The ICON table is delivered to site packed in a protective crate via a tail-lift truck only. POPP does not undertake the assembly or anchoring of tables however ICON Assembly Guidelines and anchoring instructions are provided.

The LOCAL table is delivered to site flat-packed on a pallet via a tail-lift truck only. POPP does not undertake the assembly or anchoring of tables however LOCAL Assembly Guidelines and anchoring instructions are provided.

4. WHAT IS THE COST OF DELIVERY / SHIPPING? AND WHERE DO THEY COME FROM?

The cost of delivery is quoted on a case by case basis and depends on the table model, the quantity of tables and the location of and access to the final site. All Australian orders are shipped from our Australian workshop.

Please contact us at info@popp.world for a delivery quote to your location.

5. HOW DO WE MANAGE RACQUETS AND BALLS?

There are a few different options for managing equipment at your POPP table:

Initially encourage local people to bring their own racquets and balls through education about the table and awareness campaigns. We know that as awareness grows, bringing their own equipment becomes a habit.

Weatherproof racquets and balls are available for purchase from POPP. These can then be stored in the free-to-access equipment holders on every table, noting that our evidence shows racquets are rarely stolen, lost or irreparably damaged. This is is also a great way of encouraging ‘spontaneous’ play within your community when the table is first installed.

Partner with a local cafe, library or community centre to loan or provide racquets and balls for free or with the supply of an identity card or deposit. There is of course scope to have a little note “bats and balls at the cafe” illustrated on the table top.

Where the table is located will determine the preferred option and POPP is happy to provide advice tailored to your location and community.

Please contact info@popp.world to find out more.

6. CAN YOU MOVE THE TABLES?

Unlike concrete tables, POPP tables can be moved and relocated if landscaping, development or other applications so require it. Please note that POPP tables are not designed for regular relocations.

Please contact info@popp.world if you have any questions.

7. WHAT CAN TABLES BE INSTALLED ON?

POPP tables can be installed on new or pre-existing surfaces - the general rule of thumb is that the surface must be flat, level and hard-formed.

New or pre-existing surfaces may be paving, concrete, asphalt, crushed granite, crushed limestone, compacted material and soft-fall or recycled rubber surfaces.

Installation and assembly on most surfaces is a simple, fast and one-stage process. Please contact info@popp.world if you have any site planning questions.

8. WHAT IS AN IDEAL PLACE FOR A POPP TABLE?

POPP outdoor ping pong tables are designed for parks, open spaces, retail and commercial precincts, schools, campuses and health and aged care facilities. An ideal place can be anywhere, but please contact info@popp.world if you have questions or would like to hear about the types of locations our tables have been installed.

9. WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS OF A POPP TABLE?

All POPP tables conform to the International Table Tennis Federation specifications: 2740 x 1525 x 760mm h.

For urban placements, we recommend minimum and optimum playing areas. Please contact us at info@popp.world for questions regarding recommended playing areas.
