Pedestrian-friendly, placemaking paradise connecting all the amenities with the beach.
To increase safety and enjoyment for beachgoers at Altona Beach (near Melbourne), Hobsons Bay City Council over the summer closed a section of the Esplanade to vehicles between December 2018 and March 2019. Hear, hear!
The trial was designed to safely link the beachfront with nearby reserves, the Altona Life Saving Club and the many nearby cafes and shops. From early reports, it was a pedestrian-friendly, placemaking paradise connecting all the amenities with the beach. And POPP? Our sunshine yellow HERO outdoor ping pong table took pride of place for passersby, people watchers and players alike.
The foreshore activation, in addition to our HERO table, included planter boxes with trees to generate shade, cabana-esque seating for prolonged relaxation and a bold and colourful graphic of the Altona postcode on the road. The space also provided an opportunity for market stalls, beach pop ups and outdoor dinning.
