outdoor ping pong - creating real benefits for students

Beyond the fun of a game of ping pong, the positive interactions with other students, and the creation of a ‘hub’ or ping pong destination on campus, there are a raft of academic benefits provided for students. 5 key findings are listed below:

  1. Superior learning occurs with greater physical activity participation.
  2. Physical activity enhances children’s cognitive functioning, concentration and on-task behaviour.
  3. Exercise has been shown to stimulate nerve growth and development in the brain.
  4. Regular physical exercise is likely to provide children with the optimum physiological condition for maximising learning.
  5. Correlation studies concluded that acute bouts of physical activity exert short term benefits on children’s cognitive function.

The POPP School Handbook: Strategies, Tools And Tips To Engage Students Through Ping Pong And Art

From testimonials, surveys and repeat orders over the last 7 years in Australia and the US, we are proudly aware of the fast, widespread (from all corners of the student body) and lasting adoption of POPP outdoor ping pong tables by students. For a ping pong company, we see this as a great and privileged opportunity to increase physical activity, fun, art and social connectedness within schools. Of course, if we can also ignite the flame of the next table tennis champion, then that would be a rich, salted caramel icing on the cake!

We have called on our experiences, strategies and knowledge to develop the POPP School Handbook. The School Handbook provides a valuable framework for schools to maximise the engagement, health and learning benefits for students, and the wider community and social benefits for schools, through their POPP outdoor ping pong tables.

Covering every aspect of a table placement and beyond, the School Handbook is a “must-read” for any school. It includes:

  1. The optimum place dynamics, positioning and orientation of a POPP table;
  2. Instructional guidelines and tools to create and apply artwork on a POPP table;
  3. A ‘How to’ toolkit to run a school ping pong tournament; and
  4. POPP Brainstorm - an education based platform to increase outdoor and active learning opportunities in schools.

the evidence - how outdoor ping pong can improve academic results

“The Association Between School-Based Physical Activity … And Academic Performance”, a report by the US Department of Health and Human Services, and “Brain boost: Sport and physical activity enhance children’s learning”, a review by Dr Karen Martin, University of Western Australia for the WA Department of Sport and Recreation, addressed evidence from international research published in peer-reviewed journals and provides detailed summaries of intervention research, correlational studies and research reviews.

The common question was asked: Does adding opportunities for physical activity during the school day boost children’s capacity to learn?

Enter, Dr Martin (presumably wearing Doc Martens…) and her Move To Learn model (similar to the Let’s Move campaign of the former first lady, Michelle Obama) for schools. The model centered around 5 very persuasive findings and maps the positive relationship between physical activity, fitness and academic achievement:

The body of evidence behind increased physical activity for students is mounting. We now know that by maximising the time children spend in physical activity and sport, increasing children’s physical activity opportunities (beyond the stalwarts of football, soccer and basketball) and providing environments (i.e. outdoor ping pong tables) to increase participation, the optimum environment for learning and academic success in schools is created.
