WHAT IS URBAN TABLE TENNIS?
Table tennis or ping pong (there is no difference) is a sport with a rich history in both social and competitive circles. Emerging in early 20th century England, the sport garnered its popularity in the aristocracy - blissfully unaware of its latent appeal to people of all walks of life. Adding colour to a diverse and swirling timeline, table tennis grew, and grew, reaching a player base today of 400 million and becoming the second most participated sport in the world.
URBAN TABLE TENNIS
In the last 5 years, a new wave of ping pong has emerged. An exciting, culture-driven, art-fused version of the game, played on urban, free-to-use outdoor tables and generating a palpable sense of energy with every rally. This is the table tennis of POPP. With a community at its heart, we play for the love of the game. Be it a social hit between friends or an all out, sweat pouring competitive match - our urban table tennis is ping pong for everyone. It blends culture, art, music and fashion with skill, strategy, discipline and self development. This is urban table tennis.
POPP outdoor table tennis tables, their artwork and the game of table tennis offer an envious list of benefits. Depending on your perspective - the individual player, the community, the passer by or the property owner - the benefit can be physical, neurological or social, or it can be about be place and place activation. Through POPP, we help to improve the identity and authenticity of a place in a way that engages the community behind it. Our placemaking through ping pong strategies are about being authentic to the location and invested in by its people. To find out more about specific benefits, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
PUBLIC OUTDOOR PING PONG
POPP is a tight knit but growing group of passionate people. Individually and collectively, they are committed to making active, engaged and fun outdoor spaces for people of all ages. Their philosophy is a clash of design and user experience; the built form and its myriad use. In five short years, the company pioneered free-to-use, permanent, weatherproof ping pong tables for parks, town squares, open spaces and school and university grounds in Australia, Singapore, New Zealand and now the US. But not satisfied with the game alone (which is pretty rad), POPP tables are designed for art; the transformation of a table into a unique, public, recreational art piece by a local artist enriches the experiences of community and place.
Public Playable Art
Central to POPP tables is the concept of Public Playable Art. The transformation of a POPP outdoor table tennis table into public art achieves many outcomes:
1. It transforms each table and its space into something unique, colourful and interesting.
2. It gives an artist and their community a great sense of ownership and pride over a public space.
3. It can communicate a message or a story about a place, identity or community.
4. It creates an exhibition space (on a ping pong table no less) for future artists, future artworks and future admirers.
5. It drastically reduces the incidences of graffiti vandalism (and in so doing, drastically reduces maintenance costs).
6. It adds a valuable point of difference and a placemaking feature for a property owner.
Placemaking + POPP
Outdoor ping pong packs a mighty placemaking punch - this is the game that can magic up a laughter-filled match between friends and strangers alike. And with bold colours and art on a designed, sculptural table, it can transform a mundane landscape into something unique and alive. POPP offers a unique placemaking tool that is squarely focused on cultivating more engaged and connected communities- POPP tables are permanent, weatherproof and near on indestructible. They can be used year-round, activate under-utilised spaces, bring another two or three dimensions to existing places, and they are free to use! To find out more about our tailored activation strategies, contact email@example.com.
“[It] is an urban space development with many placemaking elements. We just never expected that the ping pong table would be the feature.”

We encourage you to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org with details (and images) of your location and its surrounding environment, the current uses and users of the space and the desired uses and users of the space. We want to utilise our placemaking knowledge and experience to ensure your space succeeds.
Our Flagship table is fabricated from high grade steel and undergoes a comprehensive surface and paint treatment. A fully welded table weighing 700kg / 1545lbs, there are no removable parts (including the securing footings and convenient bat and ball holder) and consequently no need to worry.
The Local table frame and net is fabricated from high grade steel and then hot dip galvanised for a comprehensive anti-corrosion surface. The table top is a high pressure compact laminate made specifically for all year round outdoor use. The Local table weighs 275kg / 610lbs and is delivered flat-packed on a pallet and can be assembled with secure fasteners in less than 1 hour.
The Ephemeralist table is fabricated from high grade steel and undergoes a comprehensive surface and paint treatment. The table is a welded and secured fastened and includes securing footings and a discreet bat and ball holder.
All POPP tables are made locally for local orders and meet our exacting and tested standards. Be it the US, Australia, New Zealand or Singapore, our company philosophy ensures production, players and artists are local.
There are a few different options, all of which are covered in our activation strategies.
Recommended: encourage local people to bring their own bats and balls through education about the table and awareness campaigns.
Purchase (at a low cost from POPP) weatherproof bats and balls and store in the free-to-access bat and ball holders, noting that our evidence shows bats are rarely stolen, lost or irreparably damaged.
Partner with a local cafe, library or community centre to loan or provide bats and balls for free or with the supply of a identity card or deposit. There is of course scope to have a little note “bats and balls at the cafe” written on the table top.
Where the table is located may determine the preferred option and POPP is happy to discuss with you further. Please contact email@example.com to find out more.
Primarily, we deliver our tables via a HIAB (a small truck with a hydraulic crane arm), however there have been circumstances where we have needed to be more resourceful. In all case, our expert operations managers will find the safest and most cost-effective way to achieve your POPP delivery through comprehensive and structured planning and preparation process. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any access, delivery or positioning questions.
Every POPP table can repositioned as and when required. This is one of the best features of POPP tables - unlike concrete tables which can only be demolished, POPP tables can be moved if landscaping, development or other applications so require it. Please contact email@example.com if you have repositioning questions.
Our team of POPP placemakers and designers have a wealth of experience in placemaking and place activation through ping pong. One point that leads any discussion on strategies is a need to understand the space, its surrounding environment, its current uses and users and its desired uses and users. We will be happy to work with you to provide a tailored placemaking strategy for your space that is right for you. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more.
POPP and outdoor ping pong have found their home in urban landscapes. Our table tennis tables, and the life that comes with them, are transforming spaces into active and engaging community hubs. We work with a diverse array of communities and spaces and because of this, every placement is different. However, there are certain features that add to, enable or complement the placement of a POPP table. These features include seating, lighting, a good playing surface to nearby amenity and people, and of course a tailored POPP activation strategy to coherently tie it all together.
POPP tables are located in recreational parklands, foreshores, boardwalks, malls, town, urban and regional centres, schools, universities, detention centres, health facilities, retail and commercial precincts and adjacent to skateparks. For each space, they add a dimension of activity, vibrancy and engagement to a space.
All POPP tables conform to the International Table Tennis Federation specifications, to the millimetre: 2740 x 1525 x 760mm h or foot: 9’ x 5’ x 2.5’ h.
Please contact us at email@example.com for questions any the playing area size.
We love public art, and on a ping pong table, we can call it public playable art! The Flagship is designed specifically for artwork, however both the Local and Ephemeralist are suitable candidates to. The options for artwork can be:
- A client commissioned artwork (artwork that is applied by a local artist commissioned by the client in accordance with the POPP Artwork Guidelines)
- A POPP designed artwork (original artwork that responds to client brief and is applied by POPP)
- A client designed / POPP applied artwork (artwork provided by the client and set up and applied to the table by POPP)
